Basic information

• The full name is „The City of New York“ but it’s usually called New York City or simply New York

• Population of over 8 milion people

• Land area of nearly 800 km2

• Located at the south of the New York state

• Cultural, financial, and media center of the world

• Headquarters of the United Nations

History

• The area was discovered by Europeans in 1524

• The first European settlement called New Amsterdam was founded at the southern tip of Manhattan in 1614

• In 1790, New York became the largest city in the United States

• In 1916, New York had the largest black community in North America

• The city was the main target of the September 2001 terrorist attacks
