HISTORY OF CHARLES UNIVERSITY
Charles University, the oldest university in central Europe, was founded on April 7, 1348 by Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia.
From its foundation it was devoted to studia generalia and the Emperor endowed it with all the privileges enjoyed by older European universities. In accordance with medieval conceptions of the academic range of a complete university, the newly established university had four faculties - Theology, Law, Medicine, and Arts.
Soon after its foundation, Prague University developed links with the medieval intellectual movements, which were calling for reform in church and society. The defeat of the Bohemian Estates in 1620 and the consequences of the Thirty Years War meant a forced re-catholicisation of Prague University. The university remained a centre of education and scholarship, and its existence acted as a stimulus for Czech national consciousness. The mid-eighteenth century saw a gradual introduction of enlightened reforms, and this process culminated at the end of the century when even non-Catholics were granted the right to study.
At the same time, German replaced Latin as the language of instruction. In 1848, the year of revolutions, Prague University once again found itself at the centre of national, democratic and revolutionary upheaval. The subsequent period of absolutism saw the repression of the democratic student movement and the dismantling of a whole series of liberal reforms.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the university increasingly responded to the political and economic needs of society. The upsurge in Czech national life, science, cultural and political activity forced the Vienna government to divide the university into two institutions in 1882, one German and one Czech. This dual arrangement lasted until 1939.
It was only with the establishment of Czechoslovak statehood in 1918 that Charles University gained a status that fully reflected its academic and cultural importance. Its significance was underlined by the fact that the leading representatives of the new state, such as T. G. Masaryk, Edvard Beneš and others, came from pre-war faculties of the university.
The Nazi occupation in 1939 came as a massive blow to the university. One of the first repressive measures taken by the Nazis was aimed at Czech sciences, humanities and higher education. On November 17, 1939, Prague University like all other Czech institutions of higher education, was closed by force with a large number of students being interned in a concentration camps. Some students and teachers were executed or persecuted. The German part of Prague University, some of whose students and professors had worked for the break-up of the democratic Czechoslovak state, had been proclaimed a University of the Reich, and as such it was abolished in 1945.
After the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945, the University began to develop rapidly in all its aspects. However, university life was soon disrupted and distorted by the effects of the communist putsch in February 1948. The putsch led to purges, the end of academic freedoms and harsh repression of all expressions of disagreement with the official ideology. As a result of the role of teachers and students in the Prague Spring of 1968, a new and painful wave of purges hit the University and its faculties in the period of so-called normalisation at the beginning of the seventies. Only after the anticommunist revolution, which began on November 17, 1989, there was a real change of situation, which had ended than forty years of repressions. The appointment of new representatives of a free academic community was legalised in January 1990; this marked the beginning of a systematic effort to remove the forty years of inheritance of deformation in the life of the University as an educational and academic institution.
At present, Charles University consists of 17 faculties.
FACULTY OF MEDICINE IN HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ
Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové started its educational activities on November 25, 1945 as the first university faculty in East Bohemia. Initially, the Hradec Králové faculty was established as a part of the Prague Faculty of Medicine. Due to their co- operation and assistance it was immediately possible to establish a high-quality teaching staff and an effective departmental structure in Hradec Králové. The first post-war Czechoslovak president, Dr. Edvard Beneš, confirmed this successful development during his visit in 1946.
Because of the "Cold War", the faculty was transformed into a Military Medical Academy for a short time. However, in September 1958, the Faculty returned back to Charles University. For its entire existence, the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové has been among the top Czech university institutions.
University Hospital
Clinical instruction for general medicine and dentistry students takes place in the University Hospital. The University Hospital provides a broad range of health care with extensive professional activity. Scientifically and pedagogically it closely co-operates with the Faculty of Medicine.
At present the University Hospital Hradec Králové ranks among the most significant health facilities in the Czech Republic. Every year, about 41,000 patients are admitted to clinics with 1,360 beds.
Based on historical tradition, the hospital plays an important role in cardiology, cardiac surgery, and neurosurgery. Clinical departments have a good support from laboratory services and Medical Imaging Techniques. The latter one belongs to the best centres in Europe in invasive vascular radiology.
Hradec Králové
Hradec Králové is the historical and cultural centre of East Bohemia. It is located about 100 km east from the country´s capital city, Prague. From Prague it is easily accessible by bus, car or train. The first signs of the settling of farmers here date from the 3rd century B.C. In the 10th century A.D., the settlement called Hradec (Castle) became a busy one. In 1225 Hradec became a free royal town. In the 14th century it became a dowry town of Czech queens, and later the word Králové (of Queens) was added to its name. A new landmark, the gothic cathedral of the Holy Spirit, arose in the town. Another outstanding monument, the renaissance White Tower, was built in its neighbourhood in 1580.
War events in the 18th century made it necessary to turn the town into a fortress. This halted the development of Hradec Králové for 100 years and had decisive influence on further building activities. The fortress was abandoned and dismantled in 1884.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the town embarked upon well-planned construction with the urban conception of famous Czech architects Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár. The city reached its pinnacle of modern architecture during 1920s and 1930s when it became one of the most beautiful and modern cities of the Czech Republic.
A number of prominent personages studied and worked in Hradec Králové, e.g. Karl Rokitansky, a pathologist of world-wide reputation and co-founder of the Second Vienna Medical School, was born here in 1804.
Hradec Králové (with about 100,000 inhabitants) is the home of the University
of Hradec Králové (with the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Informatics and Management,
Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Arts), two faculties belonging to Charles University (the
Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Pharmacy), and the Faculty of Military Health Sciences.
UNDERGRADUATE STUDY
Since 1992, the faculty also cunducts medical degree study programs in the English language. Each year, the number of applicants wishing to study at the faculty exceeds several times its capacity. Students who have completed secondary school education are considered eligible for studies. The faculty entrance procedure for the English study programs is based on a written testing of the applicant´s knowledge of basic science in Biology, Chemistry, Basic Human Anatomy and Physics.
In the academic year 2020/2021, there were 412 students studying at the Faculty in the English study programs.
Medical degree study programs in General Medicine and Dentistry are arranged along the lines of theoretical, preclinical and clinical studies in 42 theoretical and preclinical departments, clinical departments and institutes. The curricula of Czech and English General Medicine and Dentistry study programs are entirely parallel and fully comparable with current international standards. Additionally, Czech language courses are provided for students studying in the English language study programs during the first and second year of study as an obligatory part of the curriculum to prepare them for communication with patients in their clinical lessons. Duration of the study programs in medical degree studies is six years in General Medicine and five years in Dentistry. General Medicine study program
The General Medicine program in basic theoretical disciplines is organised into four terms during the first two years of studies. It includes biophysics and biostatistics, biology, chemistry and biochemistry, anatomy, histology and embryology, and physiology. Teaching is oriented towards a detailed knowledge of the structural and functional relationships of the human body from the molecular level to the level of organs and systems. Even during the first two years of studies students visit the University Hospital where first aid and the basis of patient care are introduced. During the summer vacation after the second year of study, students are required to pass a one-week practice in the University Hospital.
The third and fourth years of study are devoted to preclinical disciplines such as pathological anatomy, pathophysiology, microbiology, and pharmacology. The introduction to clinical medicine includes internal and surgical propedeutics. Some of the clinical subjects (e.g. neurology, psychiatry, dermatovenereology, and radiology) are also taught. During the summer vacation after the fourth year of study, students are required to pass a four-week practice in the University Hospital. In the fifth year, clinical disciplines are taught primarily.
The sixth year is organised in the University Hospital as a bedside practice in Internal
Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics and in Preventive Medicine. The
instruction in the above mentioned subjects is completed by the state exams.
General Medicine graduate characteristics
Graduates of the General Medicine study programme completed complex education in all theoretical and clinical medical disciplines for obtaining knowledge and manual skills enabling their future successful practising of general medicine or any further specialisation.
Main aims of their curriculum are oriented towards providing ample theoretical background for understanding causes and development of diseases as well as possibilities of their prevention, mastering of principles and interpretation of modern diagnostic methods and the rational effective therapy.
Graduates earn basic clinical experience at clinical departments and a lot of attention during education is also paid to moral, ethical and legal aspects of their future medical practice.
Dentistry study program
The revised dental curriculum is based on the needs of the modern dental profession with respect to the requirements of European educational standards.
The dental program is composed of preclinical and clinical studies. The preclinical segment consists mainly of theoretical subjects (medical biology, biophysics and biostatistics, anatomy, histology and embryology). Starting the first semester, the students begin preclinical dental work in a phantom laboratory (preclinical dentistry, preventive dentistry), and have their first contact with patients.
The structure of the clinical part has two main areas of interest: the general medicine courses are tailored to the needs of future dentists (pathological anatomy and pathophysiology, microbiology, pharmacology, internal medicine, general surgery, ophthalmology, etc.).
Both theoretical and clinical dental education are included (orthodontics, periodontology, endodontics, paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, dentoalveolar and maxillofacial surgery, dental radiology).
During the second, fourth, and fifth year, the students are required to spend several weeks in general dental practice.
Dentistry graduate characteristics
The graduating dentist has broad academic dental education and is able to work in clinical practice.
He/she has sufficiently trained in a clinical practice, is manually skilled to be able to work together with other dental and health care professionals in the health care system.
He/she is able to communicate adequately.
He/she is prepared for permanent life-long learning, continual professional development
and is able to practice evidence-based dentistry using basic theoretical and practical skills.
Graduation Ceremony
The graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové takes place in the historical Carolinum Hall of Charles University. 743 students graduated to June 30, 2021 in both General Medicine and Dentistry study programs in the English language.
After the graduation pledge in presence of the University rector and the other academic
representatives, graduates of the undergraduate medical degree study program in General
Medicine are awarded the title MUDr. (abbreviated from Latin = Medicinae Universae Doctor),
which is the equivalent to the title M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) and graduates in Dentistry are
awarded the title MDDr. (abbreviation from Latin = Medicinae Dentium Doctor).
DOCTORAL (PH.D.) STUDY PROGRAMS
Doctoral (Ph.D.) study at our faculty is organised in 22 accredited study fields covering most theoretical and clinical branches of medicine. Doctoral (Ph.D.) study is concentrated on scientific research and independent creative work in the field of research or development. The standard duration of study is four years.
The study is completed by the State Doctoral Examination and a successful defence of a dissertation thesis. The graduates are awarded the academic degree "doctor" (abbreviation Ph.D. after the name).
SPECIALIZED EDUCATION
Since 2012, the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové has been involved in organizing specialized education for doctors in the Czech Republic. It places candidates into fields of specialized education, organizes theoretical courses for the majority of fields of specialization and gives exams in medical board certification.
SCIENCE AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Faculty of Medicine has a long tradition of research with considerable activity.
The main scientific and research activities of the Faculty of Medicine are aimed at the following areas: cardiology and cardiac surgery, geriatrics and metabolism, gerontology, organ transplants, central nervous system, clinical immunology, oncology, and computer application.
Determined students can take part in research activities in all departments and clinics
during their study. They are encouraged to present their research results at the yearly organised
Students´ Scientific Conference. In the last three years of study, the best students may have
the opportunity for an experience in a hospital abroad. In this respect, the Faculty co-operates
e.g. with the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. (USA).

Extraordinary Prize Of The Rector For Students Of Charles University
The Rector can confer an Extraordinary Award in recognition of an act of exceptional civic bravery, excellent research study amd scientific results, extraordinary representation during cultural or artistic activities or exceptional sport results at international competitions.
Prize Of The Dean For Students
Of The Undergraduate Medical Degree Study Programs
The Dean awards annually the Prize of the Dean of 10,000 CZK to the best recent graduate.
The Prize is awarded at the Graduation Ceremony. The recipient is decided on the Dean´s Advisory Board from candidates chosen by the Vice-deans.
The conditions for awarding the Prize:
1. The best average of grades in the whole course of study from all the graduating students.
2. Grade "excellent" obtained in all parts of the medical degree state examination.
3. The participation in the Students´ Scientific Conference (an additional criterion).
The Fingerland Prize
The Fingerland Prize is awarded annually for the best work in morphological fields of study published in the previous calendar year. The first author of the work must be a student (master or doctoral) of our Faculty. Financial bonus is associated with the prize. The candidates have to submit their proposal along with the publication in extenso (or the text with a confirmation about its acceptance for publication) to the Dean of the Faculty the latest by January 31. The amouth awarded is 5.000,- CZK.
The Procházka Prize
The Procházka Prize is awarded annually for the best work in surgical fields of study published
in the previous calendar year. The first author of the work must be a student (master or doctoral)
of our Faculty. Financial bonus is associated with the prize. The candidates have to submit their
proposal along with the publication in extenso (or the text with a confirmation about its
acceptance for publication) to the Dean of the Faculty the latest by January 31. The amouth
awarded is 5.000,- CZK.
