The strongest part is the analytical section of the thesis, which is appropriate and statistically advanced.
8. The formal side of the dissertation is probably the weakest part of the thesis. The language is at a good level, as is formatting and referencing, but the numbering of individual chapters and sub-chapters is very confusing. Several chapters are numbered as 1.1. This probably resulted from joining a few separate documents. It undercuts the overall presentation of the thesis somewhat.
Complex assessment (it is necessary to state whether the thesis complies with the Methodological guidelines of the Faculty of Economics, University of Economics, Prague as concerns the quality of the content, the extent and formal requirements and whether the thesis is being recommended to the defense or not; the thesis can also be nominated to a special award, etc. ):
3. The theoretical part is very well prepared. It provides a good, critical overview of various aspects of FDI, both positive and negative (the negative side is balanced and it includes very relevant criticisms of instability and of investment crowding, but it is explicitly stated that majority of the effects are positive). Previous empirical studies are also elaborated on and evaluated in the lights of their methodology. The quality of the theoretical part is higher than expected for a bachelor theses.
4. The analytical part is independent, based on multivariate regression analysis (with time lags incorporated and optimized), as well as residual analysis and spatial cluster analysis. This is appropriate for the topic and the hypothesis. It is also well- executed, with R2 and p-values interpreted. Limitations of the research are outlined.
The thesis complies with the Methodological guidelines of the Faculty of Economics, University of Economics, Prague as concerns the quality of the content, the extent, and formal requirements. I recommend the thesis to the defense.
Questions to the defense:
While showing the instability of FDI inflows to Kazachstan was there any observable worsening in the macroeconomic measures?
To what level would the FDI flow had to reverse (for example as a result ofincrease of interest rates in the developed world) to cause a recession in Kazakhstan,provided all other factors stayed constant?
