Evaluation justification (strengths and weaknesses of thesis):
When Dickens wrote his autobiographical novel David Copperfield, he pictured his own career in the life story of the protagonist who bears his own initials; D (ickens), C (harles). After all, both David and Charles become 'gentlemen novelists'.
The candidate shows convincingly how the equally autobiographical novel Great Expectations, which was written 10 years later, maybe considered to be a rewriting of David Copperfield, trying to 'heal' a flaw in the earlier work, namely the missing moral or ethical perspective. The ironic title of the later novel focuses our attention on the moral and ethical implications of the originally aristocratic 'gentleman' concept, which Dickens 'reconstructs' from a middle class perspective.
The candidate shows a deep understanding of the novels' relationship, and is able to embed both artistic productions in the life story of their author who became one of the most widely known novelist sof his time. The comparison of the lives of the two protagonists David and Pip is a well- chosen method to achieve this goal. Her English is fairly fluent and idiomatically correct, even if there are still a few mistakes to be found.
Questions to be answered by student:
Bernard Shaw called Great Expectations Dickens' apologies to Mealy Potatoes. What does this imply?
Why was Dickens unable to write his own autobiography?
Which conclusions can we draw from here with regard to the relation of life and art?
The work was checked by the plagiarism detection system Theses with the result of negative/positive.*
