TEACHER‘S OPINION OF FINAL THESIS

I. IDENTIFICATION DATA

Thesis name: Biophillic Residential Complex - Bangalore Author’s name: Akshata Ravi Kumar

Type of thesis : diploma

Faculty/Institute: Fakulta architektury (FA)

Department: UNII

Thesis head: doc.ing.arch. Petr Kordovský Reviewer’s department: FA ČVUT

II. EVALUATION OF INDIVIDUAL CRITERIA

Assignment extraordinarily challenging

The project is a residential complex for a medical university to facilitate international students, working members and large families. Along with matching the requirements of the brief, the project also addresses 2 main issues in Bangalore City, - the growing pressure on residential sector and deteriorating greenscape of the city. The project is based on contextual and climatic response.

Satisfaction of assignment fulfilled with minor objections

The thesis solves rather complex and challenging brief based on current architectural competition in Bangalore.

Based on real data the building is located on a plot dedicated to Medical University. Akshata tries to design a residential complex and answer some challenging questions of urban development in the city of Bangalore blighted by untamed development and deteriorating quality of environment. In a daring try she struggles to meet the needs of the residents both in housing quality and satisfactory and sustainable environmental conditions of living in a big city.

As far I am able to fully understand the local social, environmental and technical conditions, the design is focused on creating private and public social space blend to fulfill local needs and way of life. The intention is based on local data research and aims rather high in technical and architectural ambition. This ambition is not fully reflected in the design. Character of the architecture hoovers somewhere between tradition and modernity, the technical issues connected with the ambitious system of plants growing on and in the buildings is described just briefly. Passive ways of environmental control within the buildings with important impact on the architecture are just indicated.

Typology of the housing units – naturally do not coping with Central European – is generous both in size and standard.

Design Method correct

The student is analyzing major volume of data about the site, district and the city. Large part of the project is this rather thorough research to help us understand what is important. Amazing concept sketches and detailed variations of typology deserves appreciation.

Typology grouping and multiplying both in horizontal and vertical sense is something to highlight on.

Technical level D - satisfactory.

It is not easy to evaluate the level of technical approach to problem solving in such a different social, climatic and demographic environment as India definitely is. I must appreciate Akshata´s courage in facing this complex brief and using all the skills she has to solve the challenge.

TEACHER‘S OPINION OF FINAL THESIS

Formal and language level, scope of thesis C - good.

The thesis is written understandably. Most of the pictures used in project part are made by the student herself and are simple to understand. Visualizations are interesting but deserve either more or on the contrary less detail to let us understand the feeling of the design.

Additional commentary and evaluation

The design presented is ambitious and in case of maybe spending greater part of time for design than for analysis could result in outstanding results. Anyway the scope and volume of the task chosen and decided by the student to solve deserves appreciation.

III. OVERALL EVALUATION, QUESTIONS FOR DEFENSE, CLASSIFICATION SUGGESTION

The housing complex presented has a great potential for having a good time for the inhabitants and visitors to live in. Complexity of the technical solution and balancing on the edge between tradition and modernity in such a big project represents a great challenge for any architect. I must appreciate the already mentioned courage to achieve such a goal. Akshata used and probably spent all her efforts to finish this design in rather complicated conditions of this strange springtime.

I evaluated all the time Akshata spent in our group and suggest give this Thesis a go.

TEACHER‘S OPINION OF FINAL THESIS

Questions:

1) how would you use the rain water to help the designed plants to survive and sustain ? 2) is there any kind of similar housing complex on university grounds already executed

in India? What is the longer time success of such an effort?

3) what are the traditional methods of cooling and ventilating the living space in India conditions?

I evaluate the thesis with classification grade D - satisfactory.
