The beginning

first populated by people migrating from Asia (30,000 years ago)

 Native Americans

1492 – Christopher Columbus discovered American continent

1607 – the first English colony founded (Virginia) – bad location, attacks of Indians, starvation

– tobacco plantations  beginning of the slavery

1620 – Pilgrim Fathers landed in the New World – the Mayflower

– the first Thanksgiving day

Conflict with Britain

just for the benefit of the mother country

the Navigation Acts – certain goods only to England

“no taxation without representation” – no representatives in the British parliament

1773 – Boston Tea Party – of the protests against the British rule

1774 – 1st Continental Congress – boycott of English goods

1775 – 2nd Continental Congress – war against Britain began

1776 – Declaration of Independence

1783 – The Treaty of Paris

– freedom of the 13 colonies – own government and laws

1787 – new constitution for United States of America

1789 – first president – George Washington

1791 – Bill of Rights

1800 – capital city – Washington D.C.

settlers moving westwards, 45 states in the union

1803 – territory increased by the Louisiana purchase

1848 – Mexican war

– California and New Mexico acquired
