Succession Planning and Talent Development in Family Business
Mel Loetscher
The objective of this thesis is to analyze family businesses and their approach to succession.
E V A L U A T I O N O F T H E M A S T E R ' S T H E S I S
The author has chosen the topic of succession in family businesses. It is the cornerstone for the longevity of this type of businesses and thus still an attractive field. I must admit I am a bit disappointed with the final outcome of the thesis. Initially the author intended to focus on the succession plan in his father´s business and on the transfer to author´s generation. The methodology was set to be primarily qualitative research. Later on the goal of the thesis has changed and the mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods was introduced. The outcome is unfortunately relatively shallow, research results very descriptive and conclusions very vague. The communication with the author during the semester was very good and smooth but probably not so worthy - based on final result. That is a shame. The alignment among the goal, methodology and conclusions also has its flaws.
1.
The author himself is a potential successor in their family business. What are the main takeaways from this thesis to their family and business?
2.
What is the role of a family constitution/protocol in the succession process?
