Title: Analysis and Control Design of the Hydraulic Test Rig
Thesis version: 1
Student: Jaishree Ananthkumar
1. Is the thesis consistent with its assignment?
The work covers a wide spectrum of modelling, identification and control tools focused on Hydraulic test rig. The simulation are performed in the Matlab, Simulink environment. The main topic is interesting and valuable. The thesis is written in interesting, vivid style. However, there are a lot of formulation imprecisions and some sentences are a bit clumsy and cumbersome.
2. Basic evaluation of the thesis:
There are no doubt that the thesis has original features. The novel results can be seen in simulation, controller design, relay test experiment and particularly in the creation of mathematical modelling.
The results are quite clear, simulation models without relevant objections.
3. Evaluation of the selection and utilization of literatures:
The number of references is 11 publications which cover almost all necessary topics for the thesis.
However, using and citing of references are very rare and inconsistent. More attention had to be devoted to relay identification experiment and controller design, especially in the state space approach.
4. Evaluation of formal aspects of the thesis:
The thesis is scheduled into 8 chapters and the text and figures cover 55 pages which can be
considered as an adequate length. More careful scheduling between theoretical and experimental parts would be appreciated. The theory of the state space description, state observers and state feedback should be deeper.
5. Describe whether the thesis has findings and how they could be used:
Main results can be seen in simulation and experimental works in analysis and control design of the hydraulic test rig. Utilizing of relay based principle for the identification and design is original novelty in this equipment.
6. Comments and Critical Comments:
Includes too many topics as identification, analysis, deriving mathematical models, controller design and many simulation experiments and programming. The main drawback can be seen stylistic and grammar. There are few typos but several stylistic incorrect formulations and sentences (e.g. “We reasoned, to understand and implement…” at p. 62, or “First it is necessary to check….” at p. 52,... ), Fig. 14 and Fig 15 seem to be incomplete, Fig. 24 is not clear. The relay feedback could be explained more carefully. Eq. (2.1), (2.2) and Fig. 6 is too empty. Many articles (definite, indefinite) are used incorrectly or missing.
Questions:
a) Why the observer gains (p. 59) are so high?
b) What is set point s=0.1 in p. 51?
c) Explain the test rig in p. 42-43.
d) What is the eigen frequency in p. 32 (and others)?
7. Thesis evalluation
The work represents an average master thesis dealing with modelling and control of the Hydraulic test rig. The thesis brings new and interesting results, attention to further research in this field can be recommended.
