Strategic Analysis of Huawei Technologies Group Co., Ltd in Chinese market
Sailing Chen
Aleš Kubíček, PhD.
Prague University of Economics and Business
The aim of the work should not be to perform the strategic analysis. It is only a tool designed to analyse a problem to find a solution. A research problem here is evidently missing. Stakeholder analysis is superficial. Huawei's claim of being employee- owned has been disputed (see a working paper by Balding & Clarke, 2019. Who Owns Huawei?). If anything, I would include the trade union and the CEO/founder. The VRIO and SWOT analyses are also done poorly. Quantifying the individual analyses' factors would help identify the crucial elements to develop strategic options from the final SWOT analysis. The author mentions some Huawei´s financial troubles but without any financial analysis it is hard to support the argument. Conducting a strategic analysis on the market leader typically leads to generic recommendations, and it happens here as well. The format also has its flaws (e.g. VIRO instead of VRIO analysis, limitations are discussed in the practical part). Moreover, I consider resources such as Investopedia to be absolutely unsuitable for a bachelor thesis.
Question: 1) How China and the US trade war influences Huawei in the domestic market? 2) Could you formulate the reason for conducting a strategic analysis of Huawei? 3) Why has the board of directors the higher power and interest compared to
"shareholding employees"?
