Konkrétní připomínky a dotazy k práci:
The submitted thesis titled „Analysis of the Evolution of Migration Policies in Mexico and the United States, from Development to Containment: A Review of Migrant Caravans from the Northern Triangle of Central America during the Period 2014 to 2020“ focuses on a very interesting and for International Relations relevant topic, the final outcome is, however, less satisfactory. The topic was not consulted, therefore, as a supervisor, I could not have influenced the final text. On the other hand, it is necessary to emphasise that the author worked on her own and if it was not for several shortcomings, I would evaluate the thesis even better.
Concerning the positive aspects of Ms. Flores’ thesis, I have to admit that the text is very readable, written in advanced English with very few grammatical/stylistic errors. The applied theory fits the case study perfectly. The author draws on many sources covering more than 10 pages, formal requirements are almost fully met, referencing is meticulous and also several figures and maps are included in Appendices.
Unfortunately, there are several significant shortcomings. First, the theoretical part is too short as it does not cover 1/3 of the text. The author should have elaborated more on Wallerstein’s Theory of Core and Periphery and especially should have explained in detail why it is appropriate for the empirical part.
Second, methodology or research design is not explicitly mentioned, which is a considerable shortcoming.
Moreover, it would establish a clearer and coherent structure, which the text badly needs. Lastly, a shorter title of the thesis would be more appropriate.
On the whole, taking into consideration all positive and negative aspects of the thesis, I do recommend the thesis for defence with final evaluation very good.
Questions for defence:
1. Can you comment on the progress achieved in the policy of US and Mexico? How does AMLO differ from his predecessors? How does Joe Biden fare so far?
2. What steps or measures do you suggest taking in order to reduce tensions between the US and Mexico?
