Research on Researchers: Impact of COVID-19 on Early-Stage Researchers in The Czech Republic, Their Top Concerns and Work Expectations toward the Post- Pandemic Future Workplace
Huynh Tran Nhan Ai
The objective was to understand the perception of pandemic impacts on junior researchers.
E V A L U A T I O N O F T H E M A S T E R ' S T H E S I S
The author decided to map out the experiences of junior researchers, Ph.D. students, and postdocs during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The theoretical part maps out the pandemic development in the Czech Republic and combines it with a literature review. The empirical part is based on 13 semi-structured interviews. The author conducted interviews with researchers with less than five years of experience. The results of the interviews confirmed the negative impact on well-being and research activity, child care, and anxiety relating to income and job security. The author describes an in-depth literature review, but I think there could be more sources used if we take into account the number of research that relates to the topics discussed. I think that the author had a very ambitious goal, but the selection of topics was rather broad. I think a narrower focus could bring deeper understanding. I appreciate an interesting topic selection and I enjoyed reading the thesis.
Questions:
I would assume that the impacts you describe are quite similar to other people starting their careers during the pandemic. What makes it special when it comes to the research community?
Is there an industry that can be an inspiration for the academic sphere when it comes to future developments?
